4 days of environmental education sessions.
Weds 1st Sept. Environmental ed sessions will begin with an afternoon session to be confirmed.
8.pm – 11p.m – Bat Walk. After the success of last years bat walk, Paul will once again lead a walk around the farm, ending along the woodland walk using professional bat detectors.
9p.m – Midnight – Moth trapping and I.D session. This is another event using professional surveying equipment. It is always weather permitting and hopefully we will have a better opportunity than the weather gave us last year.
Thursday 2nd September 10 a.m – 11.30 a.m. Small mammal trapping.
This event uses professional monitoring techniques and equipment. No animals are harmed during these events as they are widely used to monitor small mammal species in a variety of habitats. We use professional Longworth traps, which are similar in design to conventional humane mouse traps only much larger and more robust. Bedding and food is placed inside the traps, castors (live fishing bait) are used in case of shrews, which are carnivorous and mixed bird seed in the case of mice and voles. Paul is trained and licensed for this event and in fact helps in the training of other conservation officers for this type of work. The animals are identified by species, sexed, weighed and released. The traps are left for an absolute maximum of 6 hours between checks.
1.30p.m – 4.30p.m. First den building session.
Friday 3rd Sept.10.30a.m – 12.30p.m/1.30p.m – 4.30 p.m. A full day of den building out in the woods. It was the most popular session last year so we have decided to extend it for this year.
Other events may include butterfly sweep netting and I.D during the day to see what species we have present at that time of year.
Games from the earthworks rucksack which include tree i.d games, animal i.d games and bat and moth blindfold for the little kids.
All Paul`s events are weather dependent to some degree so may be swapped round.
